Female hair loss. For most women this is just about one of the scariest things that can happen. Women are not supposed to lose their hair…are they?
It is a very common problem and it is normal to lose hair everyday and when you wash it. Curly hair is finer in texture than straight hair and therefore weaker but curly hair is also dryer and doesn’t need to be washed every day. People who have curly hair tend not to wash it that often and then the hair loss looks more when you do wash, but its only normal hair shedding. Genetics play a big part in hair loss so look at your family’s hair. If they suffer from thinning hair then the possibilities are that you will too.
There are many things you can do to help the hair loss and diet plays a big part in this. Make sure you are getting a well balanced diet. You could also try supplements that are aimed at hair and finally get a good cut; you will be surprised how much it helps to just get it cut regularly.
If the hair loss is really worrying you, you can go the doctors and ask for a thyroid check along with oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels. They usually come back normal but at least you get peace of mind.
Other hair loss causes include, anemia, stress, poor nutrition and a serious illness so if in doubt go to your GP. Also if you have just had a baby it is very normal to lose your hair for a while afterwards but it should settle down in a few months it is only the hair you was suppose to lose but kept hold of during pregnancy and now you are loosing it all at once and are noticing it more.
If you have ruled out everything and are still concerned then maybe it’s time to see a dermatologist that specializes in hair loss. They examine your medical history and photograph your hair and scalp for posterity, then a topical anaesthetic is applied for them to take a biopsy of the scalp. The biopsy is then analysed to see if your hair loss is genetic or temporary. It’s amazing what they can do and people do not realise that it is women who suffer from hair loss as much as men but the difference being woman rarely loose all their hair and go as bald as men. The clinic will help you and advise what’s best for you when they get your results back.
Significant hair loss that continues for more than 3 months is cause for concern and you should see a doctor. The fact is hair loss in women can be a symptom of a much bigger problem and shouldn’t be ignored. The best advice I can give is to seek medical help as soon as you start to experience significant hair loss.
All the best, x

What is the cause of hair loss? Not clogged follicles, not wearing hats, not scalp mites or bad circulation. DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a breakdown product of Testosterone is the culprit–especially if you inherit the sensitivity to it. Decreasing DHT production in the body requires finasteride (propecia) or dutasteride (avodart). Even women can be sensitive to DHT and other androgens. Genetic testing is available to determine how sensitive you are to DHT and whether your hair loss will be mild or severe over the course of your life.
